The Pre-Kindergarten program at Shepherd of the Hills is brought to you by three teachers devoted to early childhood education. The hands-on, child centered, yet advanced curriculum engages the children in learning, while staying focused on the joy of play and socialization.
A letter of the week is our focus throughout the year, devoting our centers, curriculum areas, literature, dramatic play center, and even our specials (PE, Music, and Technology) to reinforcing that letter and sound. Each letter even has a science experiment – a favorite part of the week for the children.
The children also learn 20 sight words through the use of Pre-Decodable books. Math is incorporated into the daily schedule through the use of individual math trays, graphing activities, and sorting and classifying activities. The calendar and attendance routines help us with counting and one to one correspondence.
During Jesus Time the children participate by acting out the stories (even dressing up as the characters), singing a multitude of Christian songs, and learning to behave and react in ways that reflect a Christian attitude and atmosphere. The children participate in all school chapel and children’s chapel weekly. Once a month the children partner with their older Chapel Partners – a program that develops relationships and friendships across grade levels.
Shepherd of the Hills has long been recognized as holding a high standard for educating all of our students. This holds true at the Pre-Kindergarten level as well. Please check out the degrees and experience the teachers bring to our program. The after-school program is equally professional, continuing the fun learning environment past the 2:30 school hours, until 6:30 p.m. as needed by families.
