Stepping up to Seventh Grade
There will be changes for you as you step up from sixth grade to seventh grade. For example, you’ll have a hallway locker like you did last year, but you will also have a gym locker for a P.E. uniform. And—you’ll have four minutes to get from one class, to your locker, and go on to the next class. Wow! That may sound like it’s impossible, but you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll adapt!
Another change will be that you will have more than two or three teachers. Each teacher will have a unique personality with his or her own style of teaching and expectations, but all teachers work for the Glory of God, the good of the student, and Shepherd. Again, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you will adapt!
You’ll spend the entire year learning about Texas! By the time the year is over, you’ll know many new things about the great, unique state in which you live. There will be an overnight field trip to Austin to visit the State Capitol, the Texas State History Museum, and the State Cemetery. The next day you’ll attend, along with all students from SHLS Junior High, Field Day at Concordia University. There you will compete with students from Lutheran schools all over Texas in academic and athletic events.
Another change is that Spanish class will meet every day, and after completing seventh & eighth grade Spanish, you will have one year of high school Spanish I credit! In religion class you will study the Old Testament. Science classes will include many labs in which you’ll dissect worms, among other things. Math placement will be determined in seventh grade for a regular track or an advanced track. The advanced track leads to high school credit for Algebra I for eighth graders. Literature and English classes explore all the reading and writing genres as well as learn to compose a research paper.
More extra-curricular opportunities will be available to seventh graders. At this level, our athletic program becomes very involved. Teams practice after school, games will be held during the week, and there will be tournaments on the weekends with some out-of-town travel for state competition. Chapel Praise Team and the yearbook committee will meet during school, after school and some weekends. Selection to the National Junior Honor Society will take place in the spring for seventh graders.
So, get ready to step up! Seventh grade will be a great, growing, exciting, learning year!
